چکیده

Introduction The Aristarchus Plateau (Figure 1) is a distinctive, geologically complex volcanic highland in northern Oceanus Procellarum. It is roughly diamond shaped, 170 by 220 km across, and up to 2 km higher than the surrounding mare [1, 2]. The roughly linear edges of the plateau suggest that it is fault bounded. The plateau edges are essentially radial and concentric to the center of the Imbrium basin [1, 3] and the northeastern margin of the plateau lies on or very close to an Imbrium basin ring [3, 4]. These observations suggest that uplift of the plateau is related to the Imbrium impact. Aristarchus contains a high density of diverse volcanic landforms. Much of the plateau is covered by a low albedo unit, interpreted as due to deposition of volcanic glass in a pyroclastic eruption [5-9]. These deposits cover 49,000 km, which is 5 times the area of the next largest lunar pyroclastic deposit [10]. 36 sinuous rilles occur in the region, demonstrating that effusive volcanism was also important [11]. Detection of the radioactive gas Rn indicates that some type of on-going out-gassing from the interior is occurring in this region [12, 13].

Geochronology investigation of the Bahlul Daghi volcanic dome, north of Tabriz, by application of 40Ar/39Ar dating on biotite

Tabriz Basin has had extensive Cenozoic and Quaternary volcanic activity and lies in NW Iran within the collision zone of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Formations in the region consist of siliciclastic rocks of the Miocene age (Upper red formation), along with younger dacite volcanic rocks. The Bahlul Daghi volcanic dome in the south of Spiran is variable in terms of the composition between ...

A Compositional Study of the Aristarchus Region of the Moon Using NearInfrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

Newly obtained near-infrared reflectance spectra for features on or near the Aristarchus Plateau demonstrate he diversity of compositions in the region. t!ighland units are of three probable compositions: a feldspar and elinopyroxene assemblage; a probable clinopyroxene, olivine, and possibly feldspar assemblage; and an assemblage composed of olivine or olivine and feldspar. The feldspar-elinop...

Determination of long-term slip rates of faults in the eastern part of Iran plateau using finite element kinematic model

Since Iran plateau is located in the Alpine-Himalayan Orogenic belt, it is recognized as a region with a high seismic risk. Thus, investigation of geodynamic activities of the faults, their slip rates and corresponding deformation fields is very important for quantification of possible seismic risk in this region. The aim of this study is to analyze the tectonic features of eastern part of Iran...

Climate-Human interaction over the Iranian Plateau during the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene: A review

During the past two decades an array of studies have shed light on potential links between the evolution of Hominids as well as Human dispersal out of Africa and episodes of abrupt climate change. Although archaeological evidences suggest that anatomically modified humans appeared in Africa between 200 and 150 ky ago, the timing of the early humans migration out of Africa remained unclear. Stra...
